What to Know

Fjorden is an ultra-compact camera grip with DSLR-like physical control that turns an iPhone into a pocket-friendly professional camera.

Creator

Fjorden was started by Dr. Victor Henning, an entrepreneur who already once changed an entire industry. He was previously the Founder & CEO of Mendeley. Victor started Mendeley in 2008 and, within five years, grew into the world’s largest platform for scientific research collaboration (acquired for $100m in 2013 by Elsevier). Mendeley’s mission was to make the lives of scientists easier by providing better research workflow tools; it grew out of Victor’s passion for science and building something that he, as a scientist, wanted to use. But Mendeley also changed how science and scientific publishing was done: By providing a Creative Commons-licensed API to its massive database of research, Mendeley opened the doors to scientific data sharing and created new ways of measuring research impact.

Fjorden invented by Norwegian entrepreneur Victor Henning

Similarly, Fjorden grew out of Victor’s lifelong passion for photography and building something he wanted to use in his daily photography. He noticed that he was choosing his iPhone over his Full-Frame DSLR more and more often, especially indoors or in difficult lighting situations because the iPhone’s “Deep Fusion” computational photography methods were better at capturing dynamic range and the correct white balance. At the same time, he was missing the tactile feedback and immediacy of dedicated physical dials and buttons, and so, Fjorden was born to bring everything that we love about “big cameras” to iPhone photography, but in a pocketable form factor.

Description

The patent-pending design provides all-day utility as a camera grip and as a fully adjustable kickstand. As slim as an Apple AirPods case and always ready to capture extraordinary moments.

iPhone photos have been featured on the covers of Vogue, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. The smartphone is capable of shooting professional-quality images — now Fjorden adds professional-quality camera controls. Whether capturing atmospheric city streets, unique family memories, beautiful portraits, or the sunrise over foreign landscapes, Fjorden’s DLSR-like camera controls enable users to achieve any creative vision. Fjorden offers speed and precision, fully customizable physical camera controls, compatibility with professional iOS camera apps and lenses, up to 12 months battery life, and remote-controlled shooting via Bluetooth – all in an ultra-compact, pocketable form factor. Fjorden serves as a fully adjustable iPhone kickstand for video calls, viewing notifications on a desk, or watching Netflix with a morning coffee when the shoot is completed.

Fjorden is building tightly integrated camera hardware and iOS software, offering the premium quality Apple users expect. Creatives can shoot in “Full Auto” or take full control of the photography by using the Fjorden grip with the free iOS Fjorden Camera App, a professional and intuitive camera app for fast, one-handed shooting. The app offers DSLR-like focusing and object-tracking modes and lets photographers take manual control of every photographic parameter in a fully customizable interface. The Fjorden grip provides a two-stage shutter button [half-press to focus, full-press to release], a zoom lever, and customizable dial and function buttons to control Exposure, Shutter Speed, ISO, White Balance, Portrait Mode and Film Simulations etc.

Fjorden is only 10.7mm deep and, when combined with an iPhone 12 Pro and a case, has the same depth as an Apple AirPods case to easily fit even into skinny jeans. With its quick-release clip, Fjorden snaps in and out of the Fjorden iPhone MagSafe case in less than a second, and its universal adapter plate can be attached to the back of any iPhone. This makes Fjorden a long-lasting product that keeps its relevance even after users upgrade their iPhones.

Fjorden uses a premium Bluetooth Low Energy module designed by Norwegian chipset maker Nordic Semiconductor. A standard CR2430 coin cell battery provides up to 12 months of battery life and can be swapped out via the battery tray in seconds. Fjorden also works with other pro photography tools and the MagSafe ecosystem. Via an API/SDK, it integrates with other leading camera apps like ProCamera and Obscura. The Fjorden iPhone MagSafe cases are compatible with Moment M-Series Lenses and with MagSafe accessories like Tripods, cold-shoe adapters, etc.

The ethos of sustainable design and having a small ecological footprint is part of Fjorden’s Norwegian heritage. Fjorden is committing to become a Climate Neutral Certified company, meaning that it will measure, offset, and reduce all of the carbon it takes to make and deliver its products. Additionally, the company will join the “1% For The Planet” pledge to donate 1% of its sales to environmental causes.
